Darien Vasco; Sylvaneth

Hello all!

I have taken the first steps on down the AoS road! In recent months I have been getting more and more tempted to get in a game of AoS. Warhammer 9th edition never even slightly tempted me to play a game. It looked like a lot of hard work and I didn't want to read another giant rule book to play a game very occasionally!

I have really been enjoying the way that AoS has been heading, Kaelo and Aveinus have been very complimentary of the game and the fluff. So I arranged a couple of test games, one at my local GW and then with a friend. I really enjoyed the games that I had, I love how streamlined and straight forward the game play is! But even after a few games I could tell that the game was easy to play but it was going to have enough depth to make it a really enjoyable experience.

The Sylvaneth are my current army of choice. I love the Kurnoth hunter models! They are one of my favourite models in any gaming system at the moment and they alone made up my mind! I picked up a start collecting box, 2 Kurnoth hunters, tree revenants and 2 citadel woods to get my up to a 1000 point army.

My plan was to get this up and running and just enjoy playing the occasional game. However, as always, plans change! After the first new white dwarf and the article about 4 warlords, a friend of mine at my local club suggested we give it ago. Now we have a lot of variety at my club but only the occasional AoS game, so we were unsure what interest we would get. To our surprise we now have 10 people that are going to join us! We are all starting with a start collecting box and are going to play every 4 weeks in a small campaign. The first week will be with the starter set built, the 2nd time we play will be starter sets painted and then every month after we will be adding a new unit to the army depending on what we all agree upon. So after the first week it should be fully painted only!

My army will be lead by my Branchwych.

I was planning on doing the treelord as an ancient but as I get a warscroll bonus for it being a treelord that made up my mind for me!

I have a paint scheme worked out, which I will share in future posts. The only thing I have not quite worked out is how to base them. If anyone has any examples/ideas please share!

Happy hobbying!

  1. Basing them will be a tough one because you will want to avoid brown bases I guess. Unfortunately, all my bases have the brown 'mud' look so my Sylvaneth will probably look a bit stoopid. Maybe a nice summer grass would look cool?

    1. Thinking a mix of grass and rocks! I want it to fit with how I paint the citadel woods so they blend in nicely! I think maybe a base of brown, with grass over the top perhaps.

    2. Great to see your Sylvaneth up and running! It seems a few people have been using tea leaves or silver birch seeds for their bases as they look like mini leaves! Just an idea!

    3. Nice! That could be a cool idea! I saw some awesome looking mini flowers on Facebook earlier! So I might look into them as well!

    4. You could do some water effect on a muddy base. It's the fertile undergrowth of a great forest after all. On another note anyone doing a death army? I want to start one but don't have the funds yet.

    5. Nice idea! Though I think I would want a magical looking water, which would be difficult to do on a small base. I don't think any of us have started a death army yet. I may at some point as a love some the death models they did for the end times!

    6. I am starting a small army of flesh eater courts. Only have 20 ghouls but am hoping to get more like 80. Plus they can be used as plauge cultists.

  2. Agreed on the Kurnoth Hunters - absolutely great models. Also, given that it seems impossible for GW to keep it in stock it seems that a fair number of people agree!

    1. Indeed! My local GW wasn't able to hold them in stock for a long while! Really looking forward to getting them built and painted!

  3. Any plans for more posts about the Sylvaneth? I am building a Sylvanteth army and would be interested in seeing the progress on this one.
